Students have penned a creative chapter by teaming up with Perth Art Gallery.

Perth High School S4 pupils have been working alongside staff at the Fair City attraction to create art labels for the new permanent display which is titled Modern Scots.

Over the past few weeks the youngsters have had the opportunity to learn from art curators and gallery educators, gaining“valuable insights” into their careers.

During this project the students have developed their skills in analysing various artworks and have expanded their knowledge of different art styles.

The art labels they created provide information about their personal thoughts and feelings about the paintings, as well as details about what can be observed in each artwork.

Additionally, the students participated in workshops focused on portraiture and sketching, which took place within the gallery itself.

Nicola Ross, principal teacher of art at Perth High School, said:“our S4 pupils really enjoyed working in a gallery environment which deepened their understanding of how exhibitions are curated.

“Analysing artworks from the exhibition and creating their own narrative around each individual piece has strengthened their art terminology and supported building their confidence with literacy in art.

“They also participated in practical workshops, challenging themselves to work on a large scale, from life, focusing on colour theory to support them identify what colour represents in signage and labels.

“A very worthwhile workshop which has strengthened collaborative working with Perth Art Gallery and Perth High School.”

The art labels will be officially unveiled at a special opening event held at Perth Art Gallery on Thursday.

Friends and family of the students will have the opportunity to view the labels, which will be on display until September 2023.
